あるお店にだらしないスタッフがいることを発見し、レイは「He has no potential」と言って、その店のマネージャーに解雇するよう指示する。
人徳あるマネージャーは半年猶予を求め、いやいやながらレイも同意する。
しかし、そのスタッフは、マネージャーが転勤したりボスが変わるなどして、奇跡のように(hocus-pocus)、数年間仕事にしがみついていた(the man hung on)。
結局最後は、別の役員に解雇された。そのときの役員が行ったことレイと同じ言葉だった。

レイの意見はこうだ。
Our expenditure of time and effort on that fellow was wasted and, worst of all, he spent several years of his life in what turned out to be a blind alley. It would have been far better for his career if he'd been severed early and forced to find work more suited to his talents.

(1) レイは独裁者的存在ではあったが、各店舗の人事権は、各店のマネージャーに最終権限を与えていた。
(2) 思慮深く忍耐強い態度よりも、竹を割ったようなやり方が好みだった。それが100%正しいとは彼も考えていなかったが、よりよい手法と考えていた。
彼自身、人材の評価に関して、間違うことがあったことを認めた上で、そんなには多くなかったと自賛している。このやり方はアメリカ系企業では現在でも主流かもしれない。
