ABCD包囲網に苦しめられた日本が、一か八かで出た大勝負は、日本史上もっとも悲惨な戦争へと国民を総動員し、国土を焦土と化す結果となった。
太平洋戦争は、米国との互角の戦いではない。一方的な敗戦、日本兵は一方的に殺戮されるだけの惨めな消耗戦だった。
異様な集団心理状態に陥った指導者たちが、異様な楽観論を展開しなければ、あるいは回避できたかもしれない。
